He lay there till he died. He was sometimes carried on deck to get fresh air. I had no conversation with him.
I was ordered by the Doctor not to speak to him. I do not know what he died of. I was told he died from inflammation of the Bowels caused by the wound; I believe that was the case. I observed no intestines protruding when I saw the wound. The deceased was apparently in great pain. After he died I was present at the examination of the body. One large intestine was divided and wounded very much.
I knew there was no malice existing on the part of the Prisoner against the deceased. I had no conversation with the Prisoner after stabbing. The Prisoner declines to ask this witness any questions and he is allowed to withdraw.
2nd Witness Benjamin Hobson sworn. I am a Surgeon. I have heard the last witness's evidence. I think the wound described by him would cause death; I have no doubt of it. No man could recover from such a wound.
3rd Witness. The Honorable Major Caine is called into Court and sworn. States - I am Chief Magistrate of Hong Kong. On the arrival of the Harlequin from Namoa, I examined into the cause of the death of the 2nd mate of that vessel. The Prisoner at the bar was present.
